What makes a home non-standard?

If your home doesn’t have brick or stone walls and a tile or slate roof, it may be classed as non-standard by insurance companies.

Non-standard home construction may require specialist home insurance, from an insurance provider who understands the risks involved, because if something does go wrong and you need to make a claim, you will want the policy to cover you to put the property back as it was before.

What other situations require specialist home insurance?

As well as the property being built with non standard materials, the other situations that require specialist house insurance include:

  • Listed buildings.
  • Larger homes with more than six bedrooms.
  • Timber frame homes.
  • Converted barn.
  • Flat roof.
  • Heritage home.
  • Homes with prior subsidence.
  • Underpinned houses.
  • Flood risk.
  • High theft area.
  • Undergoing renovations.
  • Unoccupied homes.
  • Homes under probate, after the owner has died.
  • UK holiday homes.
  • Second homes, such as weekday/weekend homes.
  • Let property, landlords.
  • Bed and breakfasts, guesthouses and Airbnb homes.
  • If you share your home with a lodger.
  • Insurance has been refused by another insurer.
  • Poor credit history.
  • Bankruptcy, CCJ, IVAs.
  • Foster carer.
  • Operate a business from home.

Do I need specialist home insurance if I run a business from home?

Home insurance that covers you working from home is vital if you do any more than just admin work. It is especially important if you have business visitors on the premises, or if you hold business stock in the home. If your home insurer doesn’t know that you operate a business from the property and you need to make a claim, you could find that the claim will be declined.

HomeProtect can provide you with home insurance when you run a business at home, you need to complete all the details accurately when you take out a quote online, such as whether you have business visitors, whether you employ anyone else who works in your home, if you have business equipment and if you hold business stock on site.

The HomeProtect policy includes up to £5 million public liability insurance, which would be the insurance you need if someone is injured on your property.

In addition to obtaining appropriate home insurance, you should also consider employers liability insurance, professional indemnity insurance and potentially other cover types such as van insurance, if that applies to you.

Do I need specialist home insurance if my home is near water?

If your home is near water, or in a flood risk area, you will definitely need specialist home insurance to cover your home effectively. You may have heard about the 2016 launch of the Flood Re scheme, a joint scheme between the Government and the Association of British Insurers, which enables some insurance providers to offer affordable flood risk home insurance to homeowners who need it the most.

HomeProtect is one of the insurance providers to offer Flood Re policies, all you need to do is get an online quote and the quote system will work out if your property is eligible and if we can offer you the Flood Re cover.

Does specialist home insurance cost more?

Every quote is tailored to the value of the individual property, the location, the usage of the property and the value of your belongings and the valuables or itemised personal possessions. Therefore, it is impossible to state that the insurance quote you receive will be less expensive or more expensive than other non-specialist insurance providers.

We do however receive many 5 star reviews from happy customers stating that their HomeProtect specialist insurance quote was much cheaper than their previous insurer.

Please click Get a quote to find out how much the insurance cover would cost for your home. The average quote time is less than 10 minutes, so it’s worth a try.
