What is key protection?

Key Protection is an optional add-on that you can purchase alongside a Homeprotect Buildings or Contents insurance policy. It provides cover for your home, vehicle or office keys (including security safe keys and any immobiliser, infrared handset or alarm that is integral to those keys) if they are lost, stolen or accidentally damaged.

The policy covers the cost of replacing lost or stolen keys, new locks if a security risk arises, locksmith callout charges, and more. There are limits per incident and per year, as well as conditions you’ll need to meet when making a claim.

What’s covered?

Feature Cover Notes
Annual claims limit Up to £1,500 Maximum across all claims per year
Locksmith charges ✓ When keys are lost, stolen or accidentally damaged
New locks ✓ Only if a Security Risk has arisen, as assessed by Coplus
Replacement keys ✓ Includes vehicle, home, and office keys
Keys locked inside property or vehicle Up to £50 Reimbursed after Coplus validate the claim
Keys broken in the lock Up to £50 Applies if keys are unusable due to breakage in the lock
Vehicle hire Up to £40/day (max 3 days) If your car is unusable due to key loss, theft or damage
Onward transport costs Up to £100/day (max 3 days) If you’re stranded and vehicle access isn’t possible

What’s Not Covered?

Certain circumstances are excluded from cover. Key exclusions include:

  • Any claim exceeding the £1,500 total annual limit
  • Keys lost or stolen for less than 3 days, unless Coplus agrees undue hardship would otherwise occur
  • Claims made more than 30 days after the incident
  • Stolen keys not reported to the police and without a crime reference number
  • Deliberate or criminal acts
  • Claims made without valid receipts or pre-authorisation by Coplus
  • Replacement of locks or keys to a higher specification than those lost
  • Costs from failing to attend a locksmith appointment or using your own contractor
  • Duplicate keys already available, unless hardship or significant cost can be shown
  • General wear and tear or maintenance of locks/keys

How to Make a Claim

To claim, contact Coplus (the claims administrator for this cover):

You must report claims within 30 days. If the keys were stolen, you must report it to the police and obtain a crime reference number.

Always quote ‘Homeprotect’ when contacting Coplus.

How to Protect Your Keys

To reduce your risk of needing to claim, Coplus recommends:

  • Don’t label your keys with your name or address
  • Never leave keys unattended or hide them in obvious places
  • Keep duplicate keys on a separate keyring
  • Don’t leave keys near windows or doors
  • Always lock your car, even briefly

Taking these steps helps prevent theft and may help with your claim.
