High risk occupation home insurance
If you work from home, have regular visitors, or you work overnight, home insurance can be tricky
Some occupations cause insurance companies to worry about the increased risk to the security of your home and your belongings. These occupations tend to either involve you working at home, having regular visitors to the property or if you go out to work at night leaving the property empty and vulnerable to burglars.
These so-called 'hard-to-insure' occupations include childminders, musicians, pop stars, private tutors, taxi drivers and the police. If you slot into one of these categories you may have experienced long phone calls with insurance companies, followed by reading stringent terms and conditions on your policy and no doubt there has been a hefty premium to pay.
However, with HomeProtect you’ll notice how easy it is to get your quote and buy your policy online, in minutes. You can even buy your policy on your mobile phone if you’re out and about. You won’t have to talk to us unless you really want to.

What our customers say
Your questions answered
Why do jobs which involve late shifts count as high risk occupations for home insurance?
It’s an unfortunate fact of crime statistics that properties which are empty overnight (because you’re working a night shift) are at higher risk of being burgled. This can impact a surprisingly wide range of occupations including doctors and nurses, and security guards but also musicians, especially if your band is well enough known that thieves can find out when you’re out at a gig!
What other aspects of my occupation affects my insurance?
Some lines of work lead you to storing cash – or other items which are highly attractive to burglars – at home, whether overnight or longer term. This group includes jewellers, taxi drivers, shop workers and book makers.
Police offiers can also be targets for malicious damage or arson.
Having a high volume of visitors to your home for business purposes – for example, because you’re a childminder – increases the risk of accidental damage and public liability claims which impacts your insurance premium.
Can I get home insurance if I have a high risk occupation?
HomeProtect aims to provide a quote for home insurance online, whatever your occupation.
