Home Insurance Cover Whatever Your Occupation

Some occupations cause insurance companies to worry about the increased risk to the security of your home and your belongings. These occupations tend to either involve you working at home, having regular visitors to the property or if you go out to work at night leaving the property empty and vulnerable to burglars.

These so-called ‘hard-to-insure’ occupations include childminders, musicians, pop stars, private tutors, taxi drivers and the police. If you slot into one of these categories you may have experienced long phone calls with insurance companies, followed by reading stringent terms and conditions on your policy and no doubt there has been a hefty premium to pay.

However, with Homeprotect you’ll notice how easy it is to get your quote and buy your policy online, in minutes. You can even buy your policy on your mobile phone if you’re out and about. You won’t have to talk to us unless you really want to.

What’s covered by BUILDINGS & contents insurance?

Home insurance provides financial protection if you need to repair your home or replace your belongings after they’ve been stolen, damaged or destroyed.

It comes in two parts: buildings insurance (cover against damage to the property itself) and contents insurance (for damaged or stolen items within the home). These can be combined or bought separately, so the first step is deciding which option is better for you.

What we offer

Quick home emergency response times

Have a home emergency, such as electricity failure, faulty locks or vermin infestation? With the 24/7 Home Emergency cover, which we provide as standard, you can typically get an engineer at your home within four hours. And if you’re worried about an uncontrollable leak in your home, we aim to have an emergency plumber to you within two hours.

Extreme weather conditions may extend response time. Policy terms and claim limits apply.

5 star rated buildings cover

Our building insurance has been given the highest rating by independent financial research companies, Defaqto and Moneyfacts.

Repair guarantee

Any buildings work we undertake is guaranteed for 24 months following a claim and any contents repair work we undertake is guaranteed for 12 months.

New for old

Where we replace an item, we will do our best to meet the original specification on a ‘new for old’ basis. If we can’t find an exact replacement, we’ll offer you a suitable alternative, or a full cash settlement.

Legal advice

We provide Legal Protection cover as standard, giving you access to telephone legal advice on any personal legal issue, under the laws of the UK, any European Union country, the Isle of Man, Channel Islands, Switzerland and Norway.

What isn’t included?

Damage cause gradually, or by wear and tear, or by failure to fix a known issue.

Faulty design or poor workmanship.

Damage caused by pets.

The cost of repairing or replacing items following a mechanical or electrical fault.

Lost items.

Your Questions Answered

Yes, we offer cover for general personal possessions anywhere in the world. This cover is for theft of and physical damage to items individually worth less than £1,500, that are likely to be worn, carried or used by you away from the home, such as bags, clothes and sports equipment. Electronic gadgets (e.g. Mobile phones, tablets, headphones, laptops), bikes, high risk items and items worth £1,500 or more will need to be specified on your policy.

Compulsory and voluntary excesses are the amount you pay towards a successful claim.

Compulsory excesses vary depending on the section of cover you’re claiming under and the type of claim you’re making. If you make a claim under both buildings cover and contents cover, both sections will apply.

If you chose to include voluntary excesses when buying your policy, they are paid together with any compulsory excesses for the section of cover you’re claiming under.

You can find your excess amounts in your policy documents.

Some lines of work lead you to storing cash – or other items which are highly attractive to burglars – at home, whether overnight or longer term. This group includes jewellers, taxi drivers, shop workers and book makers.

Police officers can also be targets for malicious damage or arson.

Having a high volume of visitors to your home for business purposes – for example, because you’re a childminder – increases the risk of accidental damage and public liability claims which impacts your insurance premium.
