Your situation

We insure landlords, homeowners with lodgers, tenants and flat-mates.

We also cover those who have had difficulties in the past such as people with previous claims, who have had insurance refused, or who have a criminal record or a poor financial history.

And we cover a wide range of occupations too including childminders and foster carers, home workers, and people in what insurance providers regard as ‘high risk’ professions, mainly because they often work night shifts.

Your property

Your property might require specialist insurance cover because of how it’s constructed, its situation or what you use it for.

For example, we cover listed buildings, timber frame houses, converted barns, houses with flat roofs,  concrete homes and even windmills.

We also insure homes in flood risk areas and high theft areas, which have suffered from subsidence, or been underpinned, or are being renovated.

And we insure unoccupied properties, properties going through probate, holiday houses, second homes, and properties used as B&Bs, guesthouses or for Airbnb lets.

Your questions answered

What makes a home non-standard?

If your home doesn’t have brick or stone walls and a tile or slate roof, it may be classed as non-standard by insurance companies.

Non-standard home construction may require specialist home insurance, from an insurance provider who understands the risks involved, because if something does go wrong and you need to make a claim, you will want the policy to cover you to put the property back as it was before.

Does specialist home insurance cost more?

Every quote is tailored to the value of the individual property, the location, the usage of the property and the value of your belongings and the valuables or itemised personal possessions. Therefore, it is impossible to state that the insurance quote you receive will be less expensive or more expensive than other non-specialist insurance providers.

We do however receive many 5 star reviews from happy customers stating that their HomeProtect specialist insurance quote was much cheaper than their previous insurer.

What is home insurance?

Home insurance is a type of insurance policy that covers losses and damages to an individual’s house building and their belongings which are kept at home.

How do I estimate my home insurance?

To take out home insurance you will need to know the rebuild cost of your building and the value of your belongings in order to purchase the appropriate level of cover. You can hire a surveyor to find out the rebuild cost of your building. Next, go from room to room recording the value of your possessions to estimate the value of your contents overall.

My home insurance policy is with my mortgage company. Can I switch?

Yes, you can switch. Your mortgage company may have a requirement that you have Buildings Insurance, but this can be with any insurer. If the mortgage company ask to be noted on the policy, you will need to contact us and ask for the mortgage company name and the mortgage account number to be added to the policy details. Follow our step-by-step guide to switching your insurance provider here.

What is legal protection for home insurance?

Some home insurance policies include cover for legal expenses as standard, others offer legal protection as an additional cover option. Legal protection for home insurance will usually give you access to a legal professional for advice, or will cover your legal fees up to a set amount. Amounts vary depending on the insurer. Take a look at the cover levels provided by the Basic Legal Expenses cover and the Full Legal Expenses cover provided by HomeProtect
